From Books to Screens: A Response to Kevin Kelly's Becoming Screen Literate

  Kevin Kelly's article, Becoming Screen Literate, starts off talking about how common it is to come across a film of some sort at any given time of the day.  Whether its pumping your gas, doing grocery shopping, or any daily routine, it is likely that you will come across a screen playing some type of media file.  Kelly talks about how the 'invention' in which we can refer to as the New media, is 'overthrowing the dominant media' which we can refer to as the Old Media. Just from reading the first couple of paragraphs, one would think the Kelly was/is against the new media, however as you read along he begins to go into, vague, but enough detail as to how these films/screens are made as if he were intrigued by the whole process. towards the end of the passage i later discovered that maybe his purpose for the article is to state that making films has become the new media but it has been made a whole lot easier to use "cheap tools to create a digital video."  What i gathered from the passage was Kelly feels as if everyone should give credit to and when credit is do.  people are making short films as a parody from other, larger films and calling them their own.  he wants to be able to see cited sources from every still frame or piece of work that was used.
i was asked, What is changing in the way we read and write in current media practices?  My response.. A LOT! Media practices have been updated and dumbed down. In comparison to early years, it is my opinion that little has been required from the average person to speak or write in a manner in which one could consider to be scholastic.  Text messaging, social media networks, and many other sources have given us lead way in how we read and write.  Meaning, we are no longer looked down upon because we text 'BRB' for 'Be right back' or spell 'could' 'cud'.  less and less books are being read because you can go to netflix and watch the movie or because you have spark notes and cliff notes and you definitely cant forget the you tube access.  As a student, the way we read and write in current media effects us daily. I cant tell you how many times i have to erase or mark something out because i have misspelled a word. As a member in society, i feel like it has the same effect on the vast majority of us. because we have all fallen victim to the media change.  In my professional career, I will most definitely get my act together simply because there will be a title that i will posses and i want everything about me to professional starting with the way i read and write.
